Thinking about the HPV vaccine? Here’s what you should know.
HPV (human papillomavirus) is one of the most common viruses transmitted through skin-to-skin contact—often during sex. Some strains are harmless, but others can lead to cervical cancer, genital warts, and even cancers of the anus, vulva, vagina, and throat.
The HPV vaccine helps protect against these high-risk strains. It’s a key part of preventive care, even if you’ve already been sexually active.
Common questions we get:
- Is it too late to take the vaccine if I’ve already had sex?
Not at all. The vaccine protects you from strains you haven’t been exposed to yet, so it’s still worth taking.
- How many doses do I need?
- If you’re under 15: You’ll need 2 doses, spaced 5 to 13 months apart.
- If you’re 15 or older: You’ll need 3 doses:
> Dose 1 – your first visit
> Dose 2 – 2 months after the first dose
> Dose 3 - 4 months after the second dose
We’ll send you reminders so you don’t miss a dose. If you start with just one dose, don’t worry—you can still top up later to complete the full 3-dose course (which is recommended for full protection).
- What are the side effects?
Most side effects are mild—like a sore arm, tiredness, or low-grade fever. Rest assured that the HPV vaccine has been used globally for over 15 years and has a strong safety record.
- Can I take the vaccine if I’m trying to get pregnant?
Yes, but not if you’re already pregnant. Let our doctor know and we’ll advise on the best timing. If you're unsure, you can book a video consultation here first to discuss.
- If I take the vaccine, do I still need to do PAP Smears / HPV tests to screen for cervical cancer?
Yes. The vaccine protects against key strains of HPV but doesn’t protect against all types of HPV, so regular screening is still important.
Gardasil 9 vs. Cervarix: What’s the difference?
There are two main types of HPV vaccines:
- Gardasil 9 is the most commonly used today. It protects against 9 strains of HPV—including the ones that cause around 90% of cervical cancer cases and most genital warts. If you’re above 25 years old, this is the vaccine for you—it’s approved for use up to age 45 and offers broader protection.
- Cervarix covers only 2 high-risk strains (types 16 and 18), and is recommended for women up to age 25.
At Hey Taylor, we use Gardasil 9 because of its wider protection and suitability for women above 25 years old.
Who is the vaccine for?
- Women aged 9 to 45
- Those who have not received or completed the full HPV vaccine series. (If you’ve started on a dose but aren’t sure how to continue, reach out to us and we’ll help guide you.)
- Anyone looking to reduce their long-term risk of HPV-related conditions
Who shouldn’t take the vaccine?
The HPV vaccine is safe for most people, but it may not be suitable if:
- You’re currently pregnant
- You’ve had a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous HPV vaccine
- You have a known allergy to yeast or any ingredient in the vaccine
- You’re feeling unwell or have a fever on the day of your appointment. You can always reschedule.
Our doctor will check your medical history before giving the vaccine, so you’ll be in safe hands. If you are found to be unsuitable for the HPV vaccine, you'll be issued a refund.
If you’re unsure about whether the HPV vaccine is right for you, you can book a video consultation here first to discuss your situation with our doctor.
